Message from our pastor
Rev. Linzy & Carla Slayden
Senior Pastor Linzy Slayden, Jr. was called to pastor Friendship Baptist Church the third week of July in 1992. His experiences as a youth director, music director and associate pastor helped to prepare him to pastor this rapidly growing church.
Pastor Slayden was born in Moline, IL and raised in the Quad-Cities area until moving to the small farming community of Cambridge in his junior high years. It was there that he graduated from High School, and met and married his high school sweetheart, Carla.
While working at John Deere, and pursuing an Associate Degree in Management and Marketing, he met Jesus Christ. After work on a Friday morning in February of 1975, in the John Deere parking lot, he accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior. Not long after that he felt God’s call and surrendered his life to full-time service while ministering as a youth director at Trinity Baptist Church in Rock Island, IL.
He enrolled at Baptist Bible College in Springfield, MO in 1979, graduating with honors in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts in Theology. He won awards for expository preaching and public speaking during his college career. He also served as President of the Fellowship Sunday School Class at Baptist Temple in Springfield.
In the fall of 1984, the Slayden family moved to Tulsa, OK where Linzy accepted the position of Associate Pastor at Southeast Baptist Church. They served there for eight years before accepting the call to Friendship Baptist.
Pastor Slayden also holds both a Master of Ministry degree and the Master of Arts in Biblical Studies degree from Temple Baptist Seminary in Chattanooga, TN. He has attended the Christian Family Institute, Northeastern State University, and the University Center at Tulsa for graduate level learning.
He has served in the Baptist Bible Fellowship International on both state and national levels. He served as the First Vice President of Missions for the BBFI; as State Representative for the Oklahoma Baptist Bible Fellowship; as Field Representative to both Brazil and Kenya. He also served as a trustee of Baptist Bible College and one year as chairman. Most recently he completed two terms as the President of the Baptist Bible Fellowship International. Pastor Linzy Slayden speaks nationally and internationally in revivals, mission conferences and marriage conferences.
Friendship Baptist Church was four months old when Pastor Slayden was called as pastor. The church has grown from 39 charter members to a membership of over 1900 in 22 years. High attendance has been over 1000 twice with a weekly average of over 600. The church sits on fifteen acres with properties valued at over $14 million. Over 75 people have surrendered to full-time Christian service under his ministry. The church supports 90 missionaries and 12 stateside mission projects with a mission budget of nearly $500,000 a year.
The Slaydens were married on October 13, 1973 in Cambridge, IL. Carla completed her Associate Degree in dental assisting, and attended Baptist Bible College for 2 years working on a degree in Christian Education. Carla is involved in the music ministry and oversees the ladies’ and hospitality ministries at Friendship.
They have four children and 9 grandchildren. Dr. Geoffrey Slayden and his wife Noelle reside in Kansas City, MO with their daughter, Kayli and sons, Hudson and Jackson. Jon, his wife Kristy, their son, Isak and daughter, Ally, reside in Midland, TX, where Jon is pastor of Second Baptist Church. Pastor & Carla’s daughter Rebecca is married to Lance Harrington, Executive Pastor at Abundant Life Baptist Church in Lee's Summit, MO. They have three children, Parker, Brycen & Laney. The Slayden’s youngest son Christopher and his wife, Martha reside in Albuquerque, NM where he is a third year resident at the University of New Mexico Medical Center. They have one daughter, Cana, with another child on the way.
Pastor Slayden enjoys sports of all kinds, especially basketball. (Ask him to show you his rebounding technique some time!) Other things he enjoys are visiting different mission fields, reading, old movies, and spending time with his family.
